  • What is oriented strand board?

Oriented Strand Board is an environmentally-friendly product that is manufactured by combining wood flakes, resins and other ingredients. The wood strands are strategically oriented to create a strong panel and are formed using heat and pressure.

  • What does Huber Engineered Woods do to preserve the environment?

Our products are manufactured to be environmentally friendly. We use small, fast-growing tree species and use the process waste to fuel our facilities. In addition, we have implemented the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Program throughout all our wood procurement operations. The program incorporates company-wide procedures and policies that meet or exceed SFI performance measures for wood procurement and timber harvesting activities.

  • Do plywood and OSB have formaldehyde emissions like some wood based panels do?

Structural panels, such as OSB and plywood, manufactured with exterior type phenol formaldehyde and isocyanate adhesives do not "off gas" like other types of wood-based panels and therefore do not require certification for formaldehyde emissions. Phenolicbased adhesives are specifically exempted in Section II.C.3 of HUD Rule 24 CFR 3280 (of the August 9, 1984 Federal Register), which states that HUD "has decided to exempt products that are formulated exclusively with phenol-formaldehyde resins and surface finishes from the testing and certification provision of the rule." The amount of formaldehyde emitted from panels using phenolic-based adhesives is considered too small to be significant and has therefore been exempted. Isocyanate resin panels do not contain formaldehyde so no risk of formaldehyde emissions exists. For a more in-depth explanation of this topic, please refer to TECH TIP "Formaldehyde Emissions from Wood-Based Panels." www.tecotested.com/AllTechnicalInformation.htm

  • Should I use a construction adhesive on my roof and walls?

Sheathing used for roof and wall applications tend to experience greater fluctuations in moisture content due their location in the structure. Use of a construction adhesive in these applications will restrict the movement of the panels during adjustment due to these moisture fluctuations and may result in panel buckling. Therefore, using a construction adhesive on roof and wall sheathing is not recommended.

  • How should I store panels at my job site?

Set bundles on supports to keep off the ground. Outdoors, cover panels loosely with waterproof protective material. Anchor covers on the top of the stack, but keep away from sides and bottom to assure good air circulation. When high moisture exists, cut banding on the stack to prevent edge damage.

  • What is edge seal?

In order to minimize the amount of moisture entering into the edge of a panel, Huber applies a wax based coating on all sides of AdvanTech and Huber Blue panels. Clear edge seal is used on all AdvanTech panels and blue edge seal is used on Huber Blue™ panels.

  • Is there a top side to Huber panels?

For Huber T and G flooring products, the certification stamp should face down. To remind contractors of this, we also apply a "This Side Down" stamp. If the panels are placed upside down, there is a possibility of ridging and might require sanding of joints. For Huber sheathing products used for roof applications, the screened side should be placed up to provide a gripping surface when installed. This will also place the stamp side into the attic which will ease identification for building inspectors. For Huber sheathing products used for wall sheathing, either side may be attached to studs. However, the stamp is often placed out to assist in panel identification.

  • Why do I need to space my panels when installing?

Like any wood product, Huber engineered strand products will change in dimension with changes in moisture content. Although Huber has greatly minimized this movement, especially with AdvanTech, expansion gaps must still be provided. To provide for this expansion gap, all square edge panels should be spaced 1/8" at ends and edges. For T and G panels, ends should be spaced 1/8" while the T and G is a self spacing joint. Providing a gap at panel ends and edges will allow the panels to expand as they gain moisture from the atmosphere in an equalizing process. Failure to provide an expansion gap can result in joint ridging and/or panel buckling.

  • Do I need to put a water sealer on Huber panel products?

Application of liquid water sealers are not recommended on any Huber engineered strand products and will void the product warranty. Proper construction practices including moisture barriers, flashing, caulking and ventilation will help prevent infiltration of moisture into the framing. If it is desired to keep panels dry during construction, plastic tarps available at hardware and home center stores can be used to cover panels until the structure is enclosed, tented plastic tarps are recommended.
